News related to intriguing murder cases hit the media on a daily basis. However, when it comes to domestic violence people often become either revolted or fascinated about the case. The latest news reports reveal the story of the Afghan family jailed for honour killing in Canada. The mother, father and son decided to punish the three girls for dating boys. The jury found the family guilty of murder and described the case as a ‘heinous’ and despicable’ murder.
The mother, Tooba Yahya, 42, the father Mohammad Shafia, 58 and the son, Hamed,21 decided to throw the four bodies in a canal in Kingston, Ontario where the family stopped on their way back from the Niagara Falls. The bodies were found back in June 2009, the main reason for the crime was actually the fact that the daughters and the first wife of Mohammad Shafia, Rona Amir Mohammad, 52 dishonored the family by socializing and dating with boys. The father claims that, “We are not criminal, we are not murderer, we didn’t commit the murder and this is unjust.” The judge was convinced of the role of this family in the murder of these girls based on the evidence. Judge Robert Maranger stated that, “It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous crime … the apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor … that has absolutely no place in any civilized society.”
Prosecutor Laurie Lacelle told the court that, “Shafia, Tooba and Hamed had decided that there was a diseased limb on their family tree. Their decision was to trim the diseased limb and prune the tree back to the good wood.” The bodies were found in a submerged Nissan car east of Toronto, suspended inside the car and having bruises to the back of their heads.
