Tennis superstar, Serena Williams, has announced she is returning to tennis after a bout with health problems, including blood clots. Serena’s first tournament will be a grass court, Wimbledon warm-up in Eastbourne, England. After which, she will return to the grand slam circuit at the Wimbledon Championships, which begins on the 20th of June. Serena is the returning Wimbledon champion and will defend her title there.
After her championship at Wimbledon 2010, her health woes began. At a restaurant in Germany several days later, she sliced her foot on a shard of glass. The cut was serious enough to require two operations to repair and Williams had to spend 10 weeks in a foot cast and another 10 weeks in a special boot to treat the injury.
Later that year, she was diagnosed with pulmonary embolisms, also called blood clots in the lung. In many cases, an embolism can be very serious, even fatal. The embolism required further treatment.
During the past year, Williams also required treatment for a hematoma on her stomach area.
Williams expressed that she is excited to be healthy and to compete again after 12 hard months.
Only in April 2011 was she finally able to return to practice after the injuries and treatments.
Her sister, Venus Williams, is now said to be recovered from a hip injury that has sidelined her for much of the past year. Venus will also make her return at the Eastbourne tournament and at Wimbledon to challenger her sister.
