Concerns Linking HPV Vaccine and Autoimmune Disorders Are Unfounded

HPV vaccines stirred a lot of controversy due to alleged health problems that could derive from their use. However, an extensive two year study done on 190,000 girls and women points out that such concerns have been largely unfounded. The study was founded by Merk & Co. and followed the participants six months after each dose of the Gardasil vaccine.

They then compared the findings by contrasting them with a control group in which females didn’t receive any vaccine shots. The results of the studies were encouraging as researchers found no increased risk for autoimmune diseases such lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Graves’ disease, multiple sclerosis and others in one group compared to the other. Despite the involvement of the company that makes the on of the vaccines in the study, independent researchers find the results of the trustworthy.

”This well-designed study looked at a large number of women who received the human papillomavirus vaccine. There did not appear to be an increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases in those vaccinated. This article speaks to the safety of the vaccine and helps to confirm that it does not contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases,” Dr. Harry Fischer, chief of the division of rheumatology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City stated, referring to the February issue of the Journal of Internal Medicine, where the article was published.
