REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ Voted Most Depressing Song of All Time

REM’s Everybody Hurts was voted as the most depressing song of all time according to a survey made by theater producer David King. The research reveals that listening to a sad tune made seven out of ten men shed tears. Moreover, the same study shows that one in five females ‘often’ cried when hearing a sad song.

Based on the same survey, ‘Everybody Hurts’ by American band REM gain the title as the most depressing song of all time, followed by Elton John’s ‘Candle in the Wind’ and Mike and the Mechanics’ ‘The Living Years’. Whitney Houston’s ‘I will always love you’ came fourth, while Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ was eighth.

“I was really interested in finding out a bit more about the power of music and how it affects us all,” David King said. “To be honest I wasn’t one bit surprised that men have such a strong reaction to music. I have been in and around music all my life and I know just what a powerful effect it can have on people,” he added.

According to the study, most people cry at home, but nuptial music can also be extremely emotional with four in ten women admitting they had cried. Besides, a sad song on the car radio can also reduce many of us to tears, with 23 per cent of men and 33 per cent of women admitting to crying behind the wheel.
