President Obama will be arriving in Ireland shortly to begin a European trip. In Dublin, he is expected to give a speech at College Green. In addition, his schedule permits for a private visit to the U.S. embassy in Ballsbridge. He may also spare time to visit the grave of
However, the centerpiece of the visit, and certainly drawing the most interest, is his visit to his ancestral home of Moneygall, in County Offaly. He will meet some of his distant relatives. The tiny town of just 298 people has been preparing for the visit for quite some time, with townspeople giving the entire main street a fresh coat of paint, thanks to a donation of paint from a large paint company.
President Obama’s maternal great great great grandfather was Fulmoth Kearney, and lived in the town of Moneygall until 1850, when he emigrated to the United States. Kearney eventually landed in Ohio and the rest is history.
In addition to Ireland, the President will also visit England, France and Poland, before wrapping up his trip.
It’s been quite an exciting recent few weeks in Ireland, with England’s Queen Elizabeth having just wrapped up her own visit to the Emerald Isle.
