Martin|Williams Launches Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign at World Cup

MINNEAPOLIS, PRNewswire/ – When 400,000 soccer fans converge in South Africa this June and July for the World Cup, many of them will find the work of Martin|Williams Advertising. The agency is launching a new campaign in conjunction with the Not For Sale Campaign, an anti-human trafficking nonprofit, that aims to draw soccer fans’ attention to the issue of modern-day slavery. Using both traditional and non-traditional media, the campaign will capitalize on the crowds attracted by the largest sporting event of the year to highlight human trafficking issues in both South Africa and the world.

The agency’s new “Red Card” campaign utilizes a well-known soccer icon to draw the attention of World Cup fans. In soccer, the red card signifies that a player has committed the most serious offense, and Martin|Williams has adapted this symbol to call attention to modern-day slavery as the most serious offense against humanity. The agency’s plan calls for street teams dressed as soccer referees to attend World Cup events and distribute Red Cards to visitors. The reverse sides of the cards will be printed with a range of headlines, including, “The youngest pro footballer signed at 14; which is old if you’re a sex slave,” and, “Child slaves outnumber pro footballers. Makes you wonder what our favorite pastime really is.” Each card includes the message “Stop Offenses Against Children.”

Not For Sale Campaign estimates that there are 30 million slaves in the world today, more than at the height of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Of this group, 50 percent are under the age of 18, a key factor in the World Cup campaign’s emphasis on children.

The Red Card campaign will also be adapted for flyers, stickers, posters and billboards. Ten million flyers will be distributed through South Africa’s Pep retail stores, and 30,000 flyers will be distributed to local students by the Save the World Foundation.

“Human trafficking is an issue all over the world, and the eyes of the world will be on South Africa during this sporting event,” said David Batstone, founder of Not For Sale Campaign. “This campaign will be a powerful tool in helping us capture the attention of World Cup fans and raise awareness of modern-day slavery.”

USAID Brings Hope Through Soccer

WASHINGTON, PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The 2010 World Cup “kicks off” tomorrow, and as the world watches and cheers on their respective teams, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) continues to use sports as a means to promote understanding and peace in the developing world. For many years, soccer (or football as it is known in the rest of the world) has been an integral part of the work that is done by USAID. The game of soccer has proven to be instrumental in bringing communities together, empowering youth, and teaching crucial life skills like teamwork, self-confidence and motivation to succeed.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20091022/USAIDLOGO)

Sports such as soccer play a significant role in cultures and communities around the world, and have the capacity to transform the lives of individuals.  It bolsters physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being and development.  There is a growing understanding that sports programs are powerful vehicles for achieving broader goals, particularly in advancing development and peace agendas.

Sports in general are a common language that can help bridge cultural, ethnic, and geographic divides. They can help people learn how to set and achieve goals through discipline and hard work. They nurture the development of decision-making and leadership abilities, while teaching people to manage both success and failure. People who participate in sports have the opportunity to improve their communication skills and gain valuable experience in collaboration and teamwork. Sports bring people together who might not otherwise have a chance to meet and allows them an opportunity to share their experiences and work together toward a common goal. These social skills and experiences are readily transferable to other aspects of life and may improve a person’s ability to succeed as a student, employee, community member, or advocate for a particular cause.

Some examples of USAID-funded soccer activities include everything from funding soccer fields in Colombia to sponsoring peace tournaments in Kenya. Sports for Life is a program funded by USAID’s War Victims Fund, which helps rehabilitate people with disabilities, including victims of landmines, and reintegrating them into society. These sports events bring together people with and without disabilities, enabling them to focus on a common love for the game rather than disabilities and differences.

USAID is committed to continuing to work with our missions and partners around the world to bring a unique focus on the world’s youth through sports. USAID has launched a new website for all things soccer: http://www.usaid.gov/soccer/ and throughout the month of The World Cup we will highlight different USAID activities relating to this sport.

For more information about USAID and it’s programs around the world, please visit: www.usaid.gov/.

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development, have provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for nearly 50 years.

MONTGOMERY, N.Y., PRNewswire/ — Basports.com is ready to win again like they did last time in the soccer World Cup.

In 2006, basports.com won 20 out of 24 World Cup plays, as documented by the Sports Eye.

And now we have that magical time for soccer fans worldwide: the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Basports.com has probably made more money for more clients over the years picking soccer winners than any other sports service.

Going into the World Cup, basports.com has won 23 of their last 32 soccer picks.

About.com’s Allen Moody concludes his review of basports.com by saying this: “I can count on one hand the number of services I would give a positive recommendation about to a fellow sports bettor.  Bob Akmens Sports would certainly be included in that select group.”

This well-known sport-betting guru at mega-portal about.com delivers the ultimate expert opinion about basports.com:

“No other handicapper can match Bob Akmens in terms of winning on a consistent level.”

And Bob Akmens, owner of basports.com, keeps winning contests and showing why that’s true.

Basports.com is unique because they’re the defending national handicapping champs in each of the major sports: football, baseball, basketball and hockey.

Basports.com has a special World Cup package which covers every World Cup release through July 11th.

Allen Moody of about.com also notes that “Bob Akmens … runs one of the only sports services I know that gets respect from bettors of all backgrounds, including the wiseguys who bet for a living.”

In an industry full of guys who burn as bright as a firecracker – and last as long – sports-betting expert Moody has said that Bob Akmens is “one of the most respected handicappers in the business,” and that “you truly do get what you pay for, plus more.”

Basports.com wins long-term for their clients. They will turn new clients into winners – guaranteed.

Who could possibly ask for anything better than that?

Panini America Introduces Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Stickers and Sticker Albums in Advance of USA vs. England Opening Match

ARLINGTON, Texas,  JPRNewswire/ — As excitement builds with the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and in advance of the U.S. National team’s opening match against England on June 12, Panini America (www.paniniamerica.net) has launched its marketing efforts to introduce the official 2010 FIFA World Cup Sticker collection for the first time in the United States at major U.S. retailers and online at www.eurosport.com. Panini’s role as the official licensed trading card and sticker collections manufacturer for the FIFA World Cup dates back to the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico and will be sold globally in over 100 countries in 2010.  Released in May, the Panini World Cup sticker and card collections are already well on the way to becoming the World’s biggest collectable program.  With over 250 million packets of stickers and cards put into circulation initially and production running at around 20 million packets a day the scale of the operation will dwarf anything previously witnessed within the industry.

The official 2010 FIFA World Cup Sticker Album features stickers of the 10 stadiums the World Cup matches will be played in South Africa and all 32 teams competing in this year’s World Cup including Mexico, Spain, England, Brazil, the United States and defending Champion, Italy. Some of the highlights include:

  • Each team features 17 players.
  • USA team features soccer stars Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley and Tim Howard
  • England team features Wayne Rooney and global soccer icon David Beckham, marking what could be the last time David Beckham will appear in a World Cup album as member of the England team
  • Brazil team features global soccer star Ronaldinho
  • Argentina team features FIFA world Player of the year Messi

After establishing a presence in the U.S. last year, Panini will undertake a concerted distribution and marketing effort in the U.S. under Panini America to promote the FIFA World Cup Sticker/Sticker Album which shattered global sales records during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.  Panini expects to continue that success and capitalize on the excitement of this year’s Tournament and the high expectations for the U.S. National Team.

“Every four years the world gathers for one of the world’s most exciting sporting events, the FIFA World Cup.  For forty years Panini has been a part of that excitement, creating memories for parents and new joy for children as they collect and support their national teams with the official FIFA World Cup Sticker Collection.  The FIFA World Cup sticker collection sells more packets globally than any other collectable, and we are very pleased to bring this excitement to the U.S.,” said Mark Warsop, CEO Panini America, Inc.

As part of the marketing effort, Panini will distribute more than 1.75 million free FIFA World Cup Sticker Album Starter Packs across the country.  The efforts will also include a presence at select MLS soccer games and youth clinics, newspaper insertions in leading Hispanic media including impreMedia and UniVision, the soccer catalog EuroSport and other grassroots sampling.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ Presents ‘World Cup 2010: Into Africa’ Ongoing Reports Filed From the United States and South Africa By Correspondent John Oliver Beginning Thursday, June 10 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT

Bicycle Kick

World Cup fever is spreading around the globe and with the start of the quadrennial competition just two days away, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s” senior foreign sports correspondent, John Oliver, embarks on “World Cup 2010: Into Africa.”  This special, multi-part presentation from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” begins with its first installment airing on Thursday, June 10 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT.

“Daily Show” correspondent John Oliver and producer Tim Greenberg travel to Johannesburg, South Africa for a multi-part series entitled “World Cup 2010: Into Africa.”  In the first piece, which airs tomorrow, Oliver embeds with the U.S. Soccer team as they train for their highly-anticipated game against England.  Future segments will see Oliver sitting down with the acting South African ambassador, taking a look at the first “African” World Cup, examining the current state of race relations and, finally, celebrating the true spirit of the game.

“As a little boy, my only dream was to one day play for England in the World Cup.  It seems that the closest I will ever get to that dream is to go to the World Cup and make fun of it,” said Oliver.  ”If these pieces result in anything less than soccer becoming the number one sport in America, I will deem them a total failure.”

“World Cup 2010: Into Africa” is the latest of “The Daily Show’s” international special reports.  The Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series previously traveled to Iran in 2009 (“Jason Jones in Iran: Behind the Veil“), China in 2008 (“Rob Riggle: Chasing the Dragon“) and Iraq in 2007 (“Operation Silent Thunder: ‘The Daily Show’ in Iraq“), among numerous other overseas destinations.

“The Daily Show” airs Monday-Thursday at 11:00 p.m. and repeats at 1:30 a.m. the same night and at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. the following day (all times ET/PT).  Full episodes, as well as clips, are posted for viewing the following day at www.thedailyshow.com with URL and embed links.
